Jesus’ assurance that his disciples would be persecuted hardly seems to qualify as a blessing. Yet the Beatitudes end with the astonishing declaration that the kingdom of God belongs to those who endure insults, pain, and misunderstanding for their loyalty to the King. Jesus does not promise his followers a pain-free life. Instead he promises that our suffer means something, and provides his own unbroken care no matter what we are facing.
