In about 30 AD, the eleven remaining disciples of an executed rabbi named Jesus came out of hiding to tell their fellow Jews that he had risen from the dead and that the kingdom of God was now at hand. Today, more that two billion people around the world are called "Christians" because they believe Jesus is the "Christ" (Messiah) long promised by God to the Jewish people. Christians are now divided among more than 30,000 denominations, having often conflicting views on what Jesus stands for and how to worship him.
How the beliefs of the first followers of Jesus became a world-wide religion, with many views but few Jewish adherants, is a 2,000-year long story of votes taken and battles fought, with orthodoxy often defined by the winners. For many, this history shows people inspired by God coming to understand the truth of Jesus in ways that allowed people with many different viewpoints to benefit from his message. For others, this same history shows the unfortunate division and even hatred of people because of their beliefs.
Don Knebel, Indianapolis attorney and member of Zionsville Presbyterian Church, has studied the history of Christianity independently and has traveled to many of the locations where history was made. he has developed a series of eight presentations that illuminate what he calls the "Points of Departure" along the path of the development of Christianity. Please join him for one all all of sessions!
