The Place Called Hope

Hope can be a word which is used in many different ways depending on who speaks it. For us as Christians, we put our hope in God and the grace and peace that is offered through Jesus’ work on the cross. While we can’t hope to go back to the way things were in any parts of our lives, we can hope in a better future when we trust in God’s goodness. God calls us to put our hope in him day by day going forward, to live into all of life’s new adventures with God’s help.

The Place Called Forgiveness

Do you remember what it was like during recess on the playground in school? We ran. We played. We bumped into each other. We fell down. We skinned our knees (ouch!) and we had to say, 'I’m sorry' a lot. Ah, those were the years. Why is it that it was so easy back then, but so hard for us now as adults? This weekend we’ll look at one of Jesus’ hardest and most important commands: to become like children and forgive each other.

The Place Called Repentance

We’ve all heard someone utter the phrase Good Grief. This is a colloquial way of expressing irritation or dismay. The phrase suggests something negative. In our Christian journey, the concept of good grief actually means what it says: it’s good! It’s a gift from God. Good grief helps us to change the way we think or behave. We can celebrate it because it opens the way to healed relationships with God and others.

The Place Called Humility

What would it be like if we were so eager to please God that all our thoughts an actions came out of our desire to honor him? What if God always came first in every aspect of our lives? This weekend, we will look at the virtue of humility. When we strive for humility, by loving God first, by loving others second, and by putting our own interests behind the first two, we can find true humility. When we are humble, God can work in us and through us to promote and peace and unity with each other. Humility allows us to share his grace with the world around us.

The Place Called Reality

Do we need any reminder that life is not always easy? We remember what the people of Haiti and those who have stepped forward to help them have faced over the past three weeks. We remember the challenges that have come our way in workplace, school, family or neighborhood. We who call ZPC home are well aware of the challenges that have faced us in our life together as a church, as the people of God. This weekend we take stock of where we are and what we face as we seek to walk well as followers of Jesus right where we are. We’ll step into The Place Called Reality.

Lavishly All In

When the Magi encountered Jesus, the true King, they worshipped him by doing two things: they fell at his feet in humility and then they gave him gifts ... not just any old housewarming gift, but lavish gifts of great expense. Their wild generosity flowed out of a need to adore the King and gives us a great model on how we should worship him as well. This weekend we'll look at what it means be lavishly 'All In' in today's world.

All In With What I Have

Jesus calls his followers into a community of reciprocal giving. In this community each of us is gifted with expressions of God’s grace and kindness. But we are called beyond simply passive receiving. The circle of care is not complete until we become “All In” to giving of ourselves. Not only do we offer who we are to the service of God, but we extend what we have. This kind of living reveals the indescribable love of God and results in hearts being lifted in worship to him.

All In With Who I Am

We have heard the age old debate concerning time and raising children. “Is it quality or quantity that matters most?” The answer is “Yes,” because the common element is actually still time. Without time together any claim to good parenting goes completely out the window. The most essential ingredient in building a profound relationship with anyone is time. It is the same way with God. He invests in us. We invest in him. Our growth as followers of Jesus is directly proportional to the amount of time we spend intentionally invested in our relationship with God. This weekend we will explore how we invest our time in pursuit of and in service to the God who claims us as his own.

Are You All In?

In the history of the world, there is far more information available today than ever before. Much of that information speaks of good options that compete for our time and energy. In the Bible, we are given the information that following God is the best option. When we choose to follow God, we should be “all in.” This month, we will be studying together how we might follow God and be “all in”—with all of our hearts, all our souls, all our strength, and all our minds.

What are your plans for 2010? Is your calendar already marked for special vacations? Are you full of hope you will gave a job that is a great match for your heart and dreams and gifts and skills? Do you anticipate that your love for your spouse will deepen? Is there a school on which you’ve set your sights where you hope to study this fall? Do you have in mind how you will re-build a relationship that is fractured? What headlines from around the world will grab our attention this year? There is one thing for sure: there is nothing for sure. This weekend we will be invited to place the full weight of our trust in the only thing that is for sure in 2010.

The Journey to the Temple

This weekend we journey with the new parents and their newborn to the temple in Jerusalem where they go, in obedience, to participate in the rituals of their Jewish faith. Joseph and Mary, in accordance with the Mosaic Law, bring their firstborn to the temple to be consecrated to the Lord. Much to their amazement, they meet two temple-dwellers who offer both praise for the arrival and prophecy for the future of their son. The righteous and devout religious man, Simeon, and the prophetess Anna are able to recognize the baby Jesus as the much-awaited Messiah and offer both praise for his arrival and prophecy for his future. While their figurines don’t appear in our crèche scenes, Simeon and Anna bring the Christmas message of hope that is found in the birth of Jesus. Through their story, may we be challenged to new levels of faith, trust and patience as we seek hope and reconciliation in our own lives.

Our Journey

The Christmas season has unfolded around us for many weeks. Red and green color schemes in advertising campaigns and store decorations have been evident since October. Parties, family events, office and school and neighborhood events have all come and gone. In these closing hours until Christmas day, so much may yet need to be done. Anticipation has had opportunity to take root and grow to overwhelming proportions. At the center of it all is the baby in the manger on that first Christmas day. On Christmas Eve we focus our attention on Jesus who is Immanuel.

The Wise Men

This weekend we find ourselves at the center of a great clash, both between the east and the west and between good and evil. Matthew 2 documents the journey of mysterious men called the Magi and their search for a King. Standing in their way is another king, Herod the Great. These two great powers converge in the little town of Bethlehem where both are faced with a decision; a decision that faces each of us today: what to do with the Christ child?

The Shepherds

While the country of India has gained some international notoriety with its formal caste system, there have always been haves and have nots in every society. Even in the suburban, modern west we still easily categorize people as less than and more than compared to us. In First Century Judea, shepherds were universally understood to be among the lowest of the low. Powerless and the object of scorn, they never would have expected to be the first to know the Messiah was born. This weekend, we will explore what they heard and the actions they took on their journey to Jesus.

Joseph

This weekend we reflect on the Christmas story through the lens of Joseph, Mary’s husband. At the outset of the story Joseph is introduced as a righteous man. His steps are filled with tension and personal sacrifice and stretch our understanding of what this means. Through his struggles we see glimpses of a new and expanded kind of righteousness emerging in the world with the birth of the child Jesus.

Each of the characters of the Christmas story has their own journey. Mary is no different.
Let Him In

When is the last time you met friends at your favorite coffee shop for a much-awaited conversation? You ordered your favorite steaming hot flavored drink, picked it up when it was ready, joined your friends and took that first anticipated sip only to find it room temperature. Yuck! How disappointing! That’s how we might be to Jesus—lukewarm, bringing no more pleasure to him than lukewarm coffee at a cafe. Rather than remain of little worth to our Lord, he invites us to welcome him into our lives wherever we currently shut him out. This weekend we’ll hear the invitation of Jesus to open the door to him in repentance and fully welcome him in our lives.

Knocking on Difficult Doors

Do you know what the most repeated command from God is in scripture? It is, “Do not be afraid.” During hard times, it can be easy to have fear and to shy away from action. The truth is that God is with us wherever we go and in whatever situation we’re facing. This weekend, through the story of Nehemiah, we will see how God gives us guidance on how to walk through difficult doors and situations with confidence in him.

Be Strong & Courageous

Let go and let God? God helps him who helps himself? The world is filled with trite and often contradictory advice. When Joshua faced a daunting task — leading God’s people into the land he had given them — he needed to understand both his role and God’s. So do we. This weekend we will unpack what this means from a historical perspective and how it applies to our lives today.
