Extreme Makeover: Life Edition

Living the God Life is not a matter of mere remodeling. Christ insists on rebuilding every aspect of our thinking, choosing, working, and relating to others. While this work is entirely powered by God, our will must be fully engaged. We must relentlessly swap out every pattern and habit that dishonors God, and "put on" the new self that he is giving to us as a gift.

Speaking the Truth in Love

What does it mean to be spiritually mature? Paul insists that it includes mastery of one of life's most difficult balancing acts: helping another person see and acknowledge reality, but doing so in such a way that he or she feels loved and encouraged, not judged or diminished. Speaking the truth in love is one of the marks that we have left spiritually infancy behind and are growing into the fulness of imitating our Lord.

It's Your Serve

Could you be the next American Idol? Do you enjoy teaching? Can you discern wiring diagrams without really trying? We each have abilities and talents that make us unique. By sharing our gifts with others, we can make a difference in the world, share a message of hope, and grow as disciples. This weekend Glenn McDonald will convey how we are blessed to be a blessing and then, through the All-Church Brunch and Volunteer Expo, help people to put their faith into action.

Something to Believe In, Something to Live Out

Jesus' followers appear to be hopelessly divided over every imaginable issue; there are more than 30,000 Christian groups worldwide, all claiming to see things more clearly than their brothers and sisters. Paul cuts to the bottom line: we worship one God through one Savior by one Spirit, and this "one faith" — if joyfully embraced — will transform our relationships with each other and with the world.

No More Excuses

This weekend we come to an important juncture as we continue to study the letter of Ephesians. The first half of the letter helps us know who God is, who Jesus is, and what God has done for us in his unfolding master plan. We have also been encouraged to live “in Christ.” Now, as we delve into the second half of the letter, we start to explore how we actually live the Jesus way with our actions, words, thoughts, and attitudes, individually and collectively as God’s people. Join us as we step out into God’s best.

More Than We Ask or Imagine

Imagine that right now you could double what you know of God. Or triple your experience of him. What if you grew in your knowledge of God by a factor of one hundred? Even if we could multiply by a million our current perceptions and insights into the God who is Three in One — Father, Son, and Holy Spirit — we would be left far short of experiencing what Paul calls "the fullness of God." His bold prayer, however, is that the combined efforts of God's Spirit and God's own power would help us grasp more and more of the depth of his love. This weekend we will consider the staggering fact that God is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine.

Confidence in God

How do you picture God? Is he judgmental and punishing? Or accepting and welcoming? Do you tend to see God as completely uninvolved and uninterested in the details of your life, or aware of all your concerns? The way we picture God makes all the difference in the world when we contemplate approaching him. In Ephesians chapter three Paul makes a case that we can storm the very gates of heaven — we can approach God with “freedom and confidence” because of what he has done for us in Christ.

God's Mystery

Most people love a good mystery—trying to solve a puzzle that is posed by gifted author. God the Author of history has no intention of hiding any of his plot twists: The Bible's most significant "mystery" (which is more like an open secret) is that the gift of salvation given to the Jewish nation is actually for the whole world to know and share.

Our True Citizenship

This weekend we celebrate the anniversary of the adoption of our Declaration of Independence, a statement that boldly stated that tyranny would no longer be tolerated and that we had the right to be free and independent states. It took years for our nation to form and for our citizenship to have any formal meaning. Paul writes of a citizenship that is real for every person who is alive "in Christ" no matter one's country of origin or country of residence. It is our privilege to be a part of the greatest nation on earth, the family of God. It is our responsibility to live out this citizenship to the honor and glory of God.

Tearing Down the Walls

“Good fences make good neighbors,” the old saying goes. But in fear and insecurity humans have built walls that separate us from God and each other. God’s daring plan has always been the demolition of such barriers. He did it through the cross. Jesus’ humble death, with arms outstretched to a hostile world, is the only strategy that will bring about the dream of global peace and reconciliation.

Overcoming Your Shadow Mission

Paul declares that followers of Jesus have been called and equipped to “do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Yet our success in pursuing God’s mission will be subverted if we yield to what might be called our shadow mission — priorities and activities that masquerade as being important, but which actually lead us to waste our lives chasing what is second best. Paul describes such a life as being “without hope and without God in the world.” How can we know the mission to which God has called us? And how can we avoid giving in to a life that is a few degrees off target?

Grace Alone

All the things we value the most in our relationship with God are his idea. He created us; he came after us in love; he is repairing the damage we have done in our own lives; and even the faith we need to believe this is his ongoing gift. Paul assures us that GRACE could well be an acronym that stands for God's Riches at Christ's Expense. What we never do for ourselves he has boldly and eternally done for us "in Christ."

But God

Which part of the Bible's message can be verified by our own behavior every day? The answer is what God has to say about sin. There is no limit to human ingenuity to try to overcome these imperfections. But at every turn we fail. The startling command of Scripture is not to try harder, but to surrender to the God who has provided our salvation all by himself.

Above All, Now & Forever

When one thinks of power, it is likely one’s attention is drawn to words like authority and influence. Money, politics, position and information are realms associated with those who are the most powerful people in our world. That means those who are the wealthiest, who are heads of state, who are above us in the pecking order in family, work place, school, and clubs and those who have control of the most information are more powerful than the general population. This is a fact of life. But, there is another fact of life that is lost to those who are not surrendered to Christ Jesus. All of this world’s authority and influence is nothing compared to that of the Son of God. And, that truth changes everything.

Praying with Power

Paul writes concerning the Ephesians that he has “not stopped giving thanks” for them in prayer. This weekend visiting pastor Samuel Stephens of the India Gospel League will testify to the role that prayer plays in the growth of the kingdom, in the first as well as the twenty-first century.

About IGL and Rev. Stephens
The story of the India Gospel League begins with one man’s conversion to the Christian faith through faithful missionaries nearly 150 years ago. Today the ministry stands firmly on the same vision and calling, to bring the Gospel and the love of Jesus Christ to unreached peoples and through effective discipleship extend God’s reign over the nations.

Rev. Stephens is the third generation leader of the India Gospel League, which was founded in 1948 by Samuel’s grandfather, Rev. Devaprasad Stephens. He passed the ministry to Samuel’s father Rajah, who in 1971 established the ministry as a Registered Society. Samuel D. Stephens served as a barefoot pastor until his father’s death in 1988, when he assumed leadership of the ministry.

Yes, We Can Really Know

The Bible calls us to believe in Jesus. Members of his Body, the Church, profess certain truths about him. Christians choose to be committed to the Jesus Way. But Paul goes even farther than belief, profession, and commitment: He declares that we can know “the hope to which God has called us.” How can we obtain such knowledge in a secular world that denies certainty about spiritual things?

Alive for a Reason

A frightening number of our loved ones and neighbors cannot put into words why it is a good thing that they are alive in the world. The apostle Paul minces no words: God knew that we were coming. In love, he prepared the circumstances of lives. As incredible as it sounds, our own purpose and God’s eternal purposes are inextricably bound together – just as God always intended.

Our Greatest Spiritual Threat

What are you counting on to provide meaning, purpose, hope, and happiness for even the smallest part of your life? If it’s not Jesus Christ, then you are locked in a life and death struggle with a most formidable spiritual enemy: idolatry. Idolatry is what leads us to conclude that Paul could not possibly be serious when he declares that everything in the universe must either find its meaning by bowing before Christ, or become a foe that will rob us of spiritual life itself.

Forgiven and Free

What part of the Bible's teaching is the easiest to verify through daily experience? Every human being is a sinner. What options do sinners have? We can deny what everyone knows to be true. We can blame others for our own faults and failures. Or we can confess our sins to God in deep humility and receive his gift of eternal forgiveness. But there's a rub: The surest evidence that we have received this gift is that we are able and willing to give it to others. Through the cross, God has paid off the world's entire cumulative debt of sin since he has graciously put us "back to zero" with him, we must do the same for others.
