This Sunday at ZPC:
Rev. Jim Capps, Interim Pastor
John 21:20-25
In this final post-resurrection sermon, Peter is concerned about what is going to happen to John, the youngest of the disciples. Regardless of exactly what Peter meant by the question, Jesus says that he must not be concerned about John, but center his attention on faith following him. We must not allow others to keep us from faithfully following Jesus.
Rev. Jim Capps, Interim Pastor
John 21:15-19
Knowing that Peter, the one who was supposed to be the Rock, had openly failed him in moments of weakness, Jesus asks Peter three times if he loves him. After hearing a affirmative answer, Jesus asks him to demonstrate that love by caring for others. In moments of weakness, we fail the Lord and then carry around heavy burdens of guilt which diminish our effectiveness for future service. Jesus meets us in our compromised state, brings us his soothing forgiveness, and commissions us to reach out in love to the world around us to express our love for him. There will be a special application for parents on this Mother’s Day.
