Feeling like a Reluctant Psalmist

TODAY'S SCRIPTURE: PSALM 147

As an old friend of mine used to say, “I feel like a lost ball in tall weeds!”  Don’t we all feel that way these days? In just a very short time, our homes have become our workplace, restaurant, bar, gym, school, day care, and church. Just two weeks ago I was trying to find a swimming suit for our upcoming trip to Florida! What were you doing? I bet whatever it was you could have NEVER fathomed that this is where we would be.

The closures came so fast, so hard and were unrelenting, like a snowball fight where all the snowballs are being thrown at you and from every direction at the same time.

Last Friday night I sat in my office pouring over how to make my business work in this new reality that I’m not even completely aware of yet. I found old tools that I had used in the past. Old techniques that were proven to drive business and notes that I had taken along the way. These had worked in the past, so they had to work now, right? But you know when your car gets stuck in the snow and tires just spin and spin and spin…that was me on Friday night.

As I was driving myself to nauseam seeking solutions, all the sudden it was like I could hear laughing. It was as though God was laughing and then said, “Mike, this is hilarious what you are trying to do because there is no playbook, game plan, or ten easy steps to fix this all. Trust only me.”

Psalm 147:10-11 says, “His pleasure is not in the strength of the horse, nor his delight in the legs of a man; the Lord delights in those who fear him, who put their hope in his unfailing love.” This assures me that in these crazy times (and in all times for that matter) we should strive to fear God and put our hope in him alone – funny thing is, that has nothing to do with the economy. Billy Graham describes fearing God by saying that it is not the type of fear as in dread and anxious concern, but rather “awe and wonder and profound reverence.” This is the fear that inspires trust and confidence. 

Remember: You didn’t break it all and you can’t fix it all…ONLY GOD CAN.

So, at this moment, let’s all “roll out of the weeds” and into his light and put our hope in him alone.
