Today's Scripture: Psalm 27

If anyone was used to living in uncertain and scary times, it was David. That was particularly true in his years of running from Saul, while waiting on God’s promise of a kingdom to come true. This song reflects that, as enemies chased him, seeking his death; as his name was slandered; as he lived as a fugitive. Even more, it gives glimpses of how David kept going:

  • He knew and sought to know the LORD as his light, his salvation, his defense. Throughout his life, even when he David messed up, we see the tremendous heart he had for God.
  • He saw the Lord as his hiding place. This had little to do with David’s circumstances at that time. He is talking also about a spiritual “hiding place,” available to all who will trust the Lord and abide in his presence.
  • David was honest with God about his needs, his feelings, his stresses, his loneliness. In his psalms, he often pours out his heart to the LORD, the good, bad and ugly. He saw the him as the one who would always be there.
  • He also stayed teachable in the tough times, praying, “Teach me your way, O LORD.”
  • David expected God to come through for him: “I would have despaired had I not believed that I would see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living”(v. 13, NASB).
  • Finally, David had learned that God’s timing often differs from ours: “Wait for the LORD,” he ended. “Be strong and let your heart take courage. Yes, wait for the LORD”(v. 14, NASB).

Prayer:

Lord,
As we walk through these stressful days, help us stay focused on who you are and seek your presence. Thank you that we can openly, honestly bring you our needs and concerns. As we look to you, may your Holy Spirit give us grace to keep walking by faith, while waiting on your plan and timing. Today, help us to readily receive from you fresh courage and strength. Thank you for all you will do.
Amen
