The stupid thing is

December 6, 2023 | Brian McCall

About the author: Brian and Cynthia have been active members of the body of Christ at ZPC for many years. We are learning a lot of math. Namely when you ADD to the family it doesn’t DIVIDE love, it MULTIPLIES it. As you can see from our photo, we were fortunate enough to spend some time with everyone in the Dominican Republic in October this year and we got lots of Mimaw and Pop-B time with our 4 adorable grandchildren.

I wait for the Lord, my whole being waits, and in his word I put my hope. I wait for the Lord more than watchmen wait for the morning, more than watchmen wait for the morning. Psalm 130:5-6

The stupid thing is, I know what the answer is and I know it all exists within me.

Let me take you back a year or so. Cynthia and I started doing some Sunday school classes with Lisa Prince, and I became alerted to the concept that there was much more meaning to life and faith than I had been allowing myself to experience; or was even aware of for that matter. So for the last year I have been on a journey, a journey within.

I have begun a ritual which I quite enjoy. I get up very early, which Cynthia has zero interest in, and I go down to the basement. My journey down to basement has become a metaphor for my journey down into my soul. As I’ve been (watching) waiting to hear from the Lord, to reveal the unknown object of my search within, it becomes painfully obvious that it is a simple, four letter word: love.

So often we get caught up in the watching and waiting, the searching...searching everywhere, but the most obvious place, like a misplaced pair of glasses that are on top of your head.

We are taught that we are made in the image of God (Genesis 1:27) and that God is love (1 John 4:16). Therefore, WE are love, at the DNA level. I have described this internal journey I’m on to a few people as if I’m standing at the beginning of a maze. And it's shrouded in mist. And it's dark. But I know at the end is love. Love for myself, love for others, a different and better way of viewing life. More acceptance, less judging, more peace.

Challenge:

I know it can be scary (I’m living that right now) but take a few minutes each day and think about that which already exists inside of us. Be it oh-dark-thirty, 12 midnight, or somewhere in between, but have the courage to enter the maze.

We might find however that the scariest thing is also the most beautiful.

Like Watchman we are waiting. This Holy season, take some time to meditate on the idea that we are waiting for something we already know comes. But not just comes, is here, that which is already inside of us. That original DNA of love. No matter what we feel, no matter what we’ve done, no matter what has happened to us, we ARE love, and loved by the author of it all.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, Lord and Author of our lives,
Thank you, thank you for what you have done in us and through us.
Thank you that before time began you had a plan for us.
Thank you for putting your love in us below it all.
And thank you for this season where we are reminded to watch and wait for you.
Amen
