God hears our prayers

About the author: Emily Elmore and her husband Ryan are members of ZPC. They live in Zionsville and are parents to three very active boys, Lucas, Connor, and Graham.

Today's verse: Luke 1:13 “But the Angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you will name him John.”

I chose this verse to reflect on today because it’s a great reminder that no matter how big or small our prayers, God hears them. Our prayers are not wasted, they are cared for in their own time.

For context, both Zechariah and Elizabeth are old. If my Google search stands correct, Elizabeth was about 88 years old when she became a mother. They had been praying for a baby for a long time – a lifetime. Can you imagine praying for something so specific for that long?

I can only imagine how Zechariah felt when he FINALLY heard Angel Gabriel share this wonderful news. He was finally going to be a father! John's arrival sets the stage for Luke’s familiar encounter of the birth of Jesus. If we really think about it, Zechariah and Elizabeth were on the front end of the greatest birth of all.

The season of Advent is exciting, but in a lot of ways, we’re waiting. We’re waiting for Christmas, for time off work, and rest as the year comes to a close. Some of us may be waiting for harder things, too - like a cure for a disease, a new job, or a family relationship to heal. We can rest in knowing Jesus is here all the time, and he's listening.

What are you waiting for? What prayers are you waiting on? Take  a minute today to jot it down with today’s date. And keep bringing it to Jesus.

Merry Christmas.

Lord,
As we drawer closer to Christmas and your birth, please help us to be patient with the things on our heart.
Amen
