Growing His Kingdom!

Today’s Scripture:  1 Thessalonians 3:9-13

Thinking of today’s scripture, can we imagine how exited Paul must have been to get such an encouraging report from his friend Timothy when he came back from Thessalonica? The last time Paul was there it seemed he created such anger and hostility that the Romans literally ran him out of town on a rail!  How easy it would have been for him to think his new Jesus followers were also run out of town. But no! Paul’s friend Timothy reports first-hand how the Thessalonians have been standing strong despite enduring great hostility and punishment for standing firm in their new faith. Prior to Paul’s visit, there was only one known king in that area, and that was the Roman Caesar. And the rise of this new church worshiping a King greater than Caesar did not sit well with the local Roman authorities!

Paul gives thanks to God for the steady and growing faith of his new children in Thessalonica.  We too can join in Jesus’ kingdom building by praising and encouraging others around us during this often-hectic month ahead (don’t you get tired of hearing how few shopping days are left?!). This season more than ever, we can share in building God’s kingdom by lifting up those weary in health and spirit or those who may be overwhelmed by the overload of seasonal marketing messages that come at us from every direction! Let’s keep Jesus as our focus this month and praise him for all the blessings in our lives!

Activity

Can you think of a neighbor or perhaps a coworker who seems “left out” and could use some encouragement? Take a moment to reach out to them and let them know you are thinking of them. Perhaps you can share your excitement for the risen King Jesus during this Advent season. Just like Paul, you’ll likely be bolstered in spirit as you share in the building of Jesus’ kingdom on earth.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,
Thank you for our salvation through your son Jesus. Help keep us mindful of him during this Advent season and help us to grow in love and peace to those around us. May the celebration of his birth this Christmas remind us that all blessings in our lives come from you.
We pray this in your son’s name, Amen.
