Scripture

As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and at once you will find a donkey tied there, with her colt by her. Untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, say that the Lord needs them, and he will send them right away.”
This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet:
“Say to Daughter Zion,
‘See, your king comes to you,
gentle and riding on a donkey,
and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.’”
The disciples went and did as Jesus had instructed them. They brought the donkey and the colt and placed their cloaks on them for Jesus to sit on. A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted,
“Hosanna to the Son of David!”
“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”
“Hosanna in the highest heaven!”
When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred and asked, “Who is this?”
The crowds answered, “This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee.”

My passage today is on Matthew 21:1-11.  This passage is about Jesus’s preparation of his entry into Jerusalem and the fulfillment of the prophecy of Zechariah 9:9. This prophecy tells of Christ coming into Jerusalem on a donkey as a humble and gentle king. The laying of palm leaves represented victory. This entrance of a humble and gentle king, and the palms leaves representing victory is a thoughtful way to  start Holy Week and Palm Sunday.

When we think about Jesus coming after our hearts, it is gentle and kind. The palm leaves remind us that when we usher Jesus into our lives, we want to recognize he has come in to cause victory in our lives. Knowing these concepts from this passage should then lead us to shout out “Hosanna!” as we begin Holy Week. Remembering the good things Christ has already brought into your life only press into the great things of the future.

Activity

Take time today to ask yourself, “Who is Jesus in my life?”

Prayer

Lord as we begin this Holy Week remind us of all the good things you have done in our lives. We praise you for coming as a gentle king. We thank you that the final days of this week will bring a procession of grace to the hearts of sinners. May we prepare our hearts to receive you each and every day by echoing the word of the people on Palm Sunday-“Hosanna”!
Amen
