What is faith?

Hebrews 11: 1 “Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see”

Our lives have been flipped, turned upside down by something we can’t see, but we are being carried through this by our God whom we cannot tangibly see. This virus creates an incredible amount of uncertainty. We don’t know when it is 100% safe to gather as a community, when some of us will return to work, or if we have work to return to. We don't know what school will look like next year (I’m not cut out to be a homeschool teacher, in case you were wondering). There is a lot of uncertainty.

Hebrews tells us faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. The three words that stand out to me in that verse are FAITH, HOPE, and CERTAIN!!! When our FAITH is placed in him, he gives us the steadfast CERTAINty of life that our souls crave. He is the HOPE we need to endure this time.

One of the constants in my life and especially during this time is music. It is how he carries me through the hardest times of my life. It is how I love to celebrate and praise him. The song that carries me through it all is Every New Day from the band Five Iron Frenzy. They are a ska/punk Christian band out of Colorado. This song will be a bit loud for some, but the lyrics are amazing. They intertwine William Blake poetry and Hebrews 11:1. It’s because of this song that “I believe in what I hope and I hope in things unseen” plays through my head and heart all the time. It calms and centers me. This song proclaims God’s promise to give us a new day.  That each day, no matter how hard the one before was, will be a new day filled with his blessing and promises. It tells us to believe in the Great Hope and that hope is unseen. That the only hope and certainty is the great I Am.

Five Iron Frenzy - Every New Day HD

When I was young, the smallest trickle of light,
Could catch my eye, Then life
Was new and every new day I thought that I could fly
I believed in what I hoped for,
And I hoped in things unseen.
I had wings and dreams could soar,
I just don't feel like flying anymore.
When the stars threw down their spears,
Watered Heaven with their tears,
Before words were spoken,
Before eternity,
Your strength my heart to mend.
I want to, fly higher,
Every new day again.
When I was small, the furthest I could reach,
Was not so high. Then I,
Thought the world was so much smaller,
Feeling I could fly
Through distant deeps and skies,
Beyond infinity,
Below the face of Heaven,
He stoops to create me.
Dear Father, I need You,
Your strength my heart to mend.
I want to, fly higher,
Every new day again.
Man versus himself
Man versus machine
Man versus the world
Mankind versus me
The struggles go on
The wisdom I lack
The burdens keep piling
Up on my back
So hard to breathe
To take the next step
The mountain is high
I wade in the depths
Yearning for grace
And hoping for peace
Dear God increase
Healing hands, of God have mercy on our unclean souls, once again.
Jesus Christ, light of the world, burning bright, within our hearts forever.
Freedom, means love without condition,
Without a beginning or an end.
Here's my heart, let it be forever Yours.
Only You can make every new day seem so new.
