A Pure Heart: Simplicity and Seeing God

Continuing our series through the Beatitudes, this message focuses on Jesus’ words in Matthew 5:8: “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.” Drawing from Psalm 24 and the broader story of Scripture, we explore what it means to have a heart that is focused on God rather than divided by competing desires and distractions.
A Heart That Can See God
A pure heart does not mean a perfect heart. Instead, it is a heart that is becoming increasingly focused on God. Yet knowing the condition of our own hearts can be difficult. In a world filled with noise, busyness and endless options, we can easily become distracted while convincing ourselves that we are simply being faithful. The invitation is to slow down and create enough space to allow God to search and reveal our hearts.
The Practice of Simplicity
One way to begin cultivating a more focused heart is through simplicity: intentionally choosing what to keep and what to cut away. We often fear that saying no means missing out, but trying to have everything can leave our hearts divided and distracted. Choosing what matters most can become an act of faith, helping us make room for God and pay attention to where God is present.
Ultimately, the invitation is not to become frantic about becoming more faithful. It is to slow down, practice silence and ask God to reveal what is happening within us. As we choose what to release and where to focus, we create space to see God more clearly.
