Mercied Into Mercy

In this message on The Beatitudes, we focus on Jesus’ words: "Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy." But what does it actually mean to be merciful? Mercy is more than an idea or feeling. It is concrete action rooted in love, compassion and grace toward others.
The Good Samaritan and God's Love
Through the story of the Good Samaritan, we see that mercy moves us toward people rather than allowing us to judge them from a safe distance. The Samaritan gets close, cares for the wounded man, gives his time and resources and takes a personal risk to help someone who was his enemy. Mercy, we are reminded, almost always comes at a cost.
We then focus on the mercy we have received from God. Rather than beginning with our sin and brokenness, the gospel begins with God’s love, grace and mercy. As we become more aware of God’s mercy toward us, we are freed to acknowledge our own shortcomings with humility and extend greater compassion to others.
Mercied Into Mercy
Ultimately, we learn that we are mercied into being merciful. Receiving God’s love changes the way we see ourselves and the people around us. As we recognize our own need for grace, we can move closer to others with compassion rather than judgment and live out the mercy we have received.
